Surprising Road Trip Destinations

Want to discover out-of-the-ordinary destinations or try activities you didn’t even know existed? If you’re itching to see the country, but are lacking inspiration, stop tourmenting yourself: we’ve got you covered!

So, strap on your seat belt, fill up that gas tank, and put a smile on your face: you’re on your way to some surprising places!

The largest city in Canada awaits!

Will you be in Toronto next August 9, 10, or 11? Plan a stop on Danforth avenue during the Taste of the Danforth event. Mingle with the crowd and celebrate Greek culture with one of the biggest communities in the Ontarian metropolis. It’s the perfect occasion to sample some tasty eats, learn more about Greece, and create great memories.

And if you’re staying in the area longer than three days, make your way approximately 20 minutes away from the festival to see the famous Half House on Saint-Patrick street in Toronto’s chinatown. It looks like an optical illusion, but it’s not: the other half of the house really was torn down!

Refresh yourself

Does the never-ending heatwave make you want to lock yourself in the basement and sit in a bath tub filled with ice? That’s not a solution! Instead, head to the North Shore, more specifically to Rivière-aux-Outardes, to see the Daniel-Johnson dam in all its glory.

You’ll feel tiny taking in the construction built in 1959 and part of the 1960s, and will be able to visit the Manic-5 Generating Station to learn all about hydroelectricity.

Breath of fresh air

If you’re not allergic to pollen, head to Saint-Andrews in New Brunswick to visit famous Kingsbrae Garden. It’s the perfect opportunity to familiarize yourself with the world of flowers and plants if your thumb isn’t exactly green, and to test your botanical knowledge if gardening books are your idea of light reading.

Enjoy nearly a square kilometer of greenery and breathtakingly beautiful and colourful petals. And don’t forget your camera!

Gaze at the sky from every angle

The long-awaited Perseids meteor shower is approaching! Why not go to a quiet place far away from the city lights and skyscrapers to watch the the sky light up during the night from August 12 to 13? Head to Tusket, Nova Scotia and stop at the Deep Sky Eye Observatory. This special place for gazing at the sky and stars is simply enchanting!

Want to stay somewhere out of the ordinary? Book a condo at Around the Sea, Canada’s Rotating House, located on Prince Edward Island. Yup, the house features a device that makes it rotate, but don’t worry: the house turns at a reasonable speed, and your stay will be free of nausea and dizziness.

St. John’s, Newfoundland with open arms

If you’re not a fan of the summer weather, you’re the ideal candidate to partake in the Iceberg Quest Ocean Tour in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Get ready to see icebergs, whales, and birds right before your eyes.

Five minutes from where you’ll embark on your iceberg adventure, you’ll find a monument dedicated to the starting point of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. The athlete, famous for embarking on a run across Canada after having lost a leg to cancer, started his memorable journey in St. John’s.
