Well, now you’ll finally be able to enjoy the warm months of the coming summer season! Goodbye cold weather, hello sunshine! Getting your backyard ready so that the whole family can enjoy using it as soon as possible should be at the top of your to-do list.

Now’s the time to start. So get your old clothes on and set to work right away. Summer is finally here!

1. Sort out your outdoor equipment

A bit of advice: before you start to rake up the dead leaves, take stock of all the furniture, accessories, games and other equipment that grace the outside of your home during the summer months. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are they too badly damaged to survive another summer?

  • Do they need repairs or a fresh coat of paint?

  • Will you need more? (e.g. do you need more patio chairs for guests?)

Don’t forget to make a list of furniture items and accessories that you don’t yet have and will need to purchase.

Once you’ve taken stock of your equipment and gotten rid of the things you can no longer use, it will be much easier to clean up your yard!

2. Spruce up the yard, deck and patio

Although raking up is mostly done in the fall, the rake is a useful tool in springtime as well. So take out your rake and pick up as many dead leaves as possible to allow your lawn to get stronger and healthier.

Then take out the broom to sweep your patio or deck. And don’t forget that bucket of soapy water to get rid of all the dirt and grime that’s accumulated since the snow has melted.

3. Setting up your summer space

Now you’ve reached the stage where you can set up your deck and its green spots.

Here’s a helpful tip: draw up a floor plan. For example, make sure you measure the space on your patio before you try to fit in that new outdoor couch set, the table and chairs and your barbecue. This will save you a lot of trouble.

Consider dividing your yard up into separate spaces: the children’s play space with the swings and slides, a family gathering space around the outdoor fireplace and near the barbecue, and the adult space with reclining chairs for relaxing. And don’t forget the garden. By dividing up your backyard this way, everyone will have their own space to fully enjoy life during the summer season!

4. Stock up on propane for the entire summer!

Do you wait until temperatures are above the freezing point to use your barbecue? If so, now is the time to fire it up!

The trick is to ensure you never run out of propane so that you are always able to cook your favourite meals on the grill. Whether you need to refill your propane tank, purchase a new one, or, if your home runs on propane, connect your barbecue to your main fuel source with a connection kit.
